IDEM's Easterly presents plaque to Evansville-based Uniseal, Inc. for environmental stewardship
August 7, 2008
Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Commissioner Thomas W. Easterly presented a plaque to Evansville-based Uniseal, Inc. president Randy Zahn today at company headquarters to welcome the company as a new member of Indiana’s Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP).
The ceremony officially inaugurates Uniseal Inc.’s three-year ESP membership term. Comprised of three divisions, Uniseal is a supplier of sealant systems, thermoplastics, structural adhesives and foam products for industrial and automotive markets.
“Uniseal, Inc. has earned its place as a new ESP member,” said Commissioner Easterly. “The company has reduced its solid waste generation by implementing a new recycling program. Indiana wins when companies use sound business practices to demonstrate their core value of environmental protection.”
Uniseal, Inc. committed to reducing non-hazardous waste generation by 134 tons through the implementation of a recycling program for cardboard and damaged pallets, as well as training employees on the benefits of recycling and waste reduction.
“Uniseal considers inclusion in Indiana’s Environmental Stewardship Program a tremendous honor,” said Randy Zahn, president of Uniseal, Inc. “Being recognized as an Environmental Steward confirms our dedication to environmental management. Our progressive view of trends in technology, customer needs and environmental regulations has allowed Uniseal to develop a comprehensive set of environmental standards and goals.”
Zahn also said that success in the company-wide recycling effort, increased energy efficiency, and lean manufacturing processes “makes us proud of our team’s dedication to the community and the environment.”
To become an ESP member, a business must maintain an exemplary compliance record, certify that they have adopted and implemented an approved environmental management system, and commit to specific measures for continued improvement in their environmental performance.
As a result of maintaining an exemplary compliance record and continually improving their environmental performance, ESP members qualify for expedited permit review, flexibility in permitting, reduced reporting frequencies, and coordination of compliance inspections. To maintain ESP membership, companies must report their environmental initiatives every year and reapply for ESP membership every three years.
